Dry needling also known as Intra Muscular Stimulation (IMS) is a modality which involves the insertion of acupuncture needles into muscles’ trigger points in order to alleviate pain, promote blood circulation and healing.
What is a trigger point?
A trigger point is an irritable and/or tender area localised to the surrounding muscle, also commonly referred to as a knot. The aim is to release this knot which effective with pain relief.

What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
Dry needling is based on theories similar but not exclusive to traditional acupuncture. They both use the same needles, however differ in the philosophy. It is distinguishable from acupuncture as it does not use the traditional theories of energistic principles outlined in Chinese medicine.
Dry needling is the westernized version of acupuncture and is a highly researched, evidence based treatment technique that aims to reduce muscle tension and improve blood flow. The main difference is dry needling relies on finding the trigger points in the muscle and releasing it, whereas acupuncture is more to restore the energy meridian flows in the body.
